check valve

On my 86 Catalina 27 there is a check valve just off the outgoing hose on the hot water tank. Its a shoflow #140. It split and started leaking so for now I have by-past it with 1/2 inch hose and all the plumbing is working fine. Why did they put a check valve there? It seems to work fine with out it. thanks, jack

Check valve in wrong place

The check valve should be on the supply side (Cold) side to keep the water heater full if your water tanks run dry.
