My 1988 Catalina 27 does not have a check valve on the bilge pump discharge line. Why are there no check valves on the bilge pump discharge line? I it OK to install one or is there a reason not to have one?

Install it.

It will eliminate any backflow from the discharge. Not having the check valve is not a problem, but having the bilge contents flow back into the bilge is an inconvenience.

I just looked at a used boat that we are cosidering. When I opened the bilge, there was a foot of water and the bilge pump running continuously. However, there was no water coming out of the thru hull because the check valve was stuck closed. Fortunately, the owner had left his battery charger on. I would rather have the inconvenience of a little water in the bilge from time to time, than have my boat sink over a piece of cheap equipment like a check valve.
