I need info on the check valve for the 270 hot water heater. Why is it necessary? Where can I get the appropriate part (I ordered one from Catalina Direct and got the wrong item). Thanks!

Are you sure this isn't the relief valve you're looking at ?

If you can post a picture, I'm sure we could identify it and you could then pick up the correct one for 50% of what a marine dealer would soak you.

There are two check valves recommended for hot water heater systems.

1. Between the pump and the municipal water inlet, in this : http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wc...d=10001&page=Fresh-water-Systems#.UhUQyT-wUas
Many boats don't have this municipal water connection.

2. On the cold water line to the heater (not shown on the link but installed on most Catalinas). The purpose of this one is to avoid hot water backing up into the cold water side.

Most plumbing is 1/2". WM sells a Shurflo 1/2" check valve, among others, I just bought one the other day for $17, unless you can get a better deal including shipping, there's no reason to have to go to CD.

Often a check valve is installed on the effluent end of the hot water heater as part of a bypass kit. This would prevent water from backflowing into the water tank after it has been isolated from the system. We have a system like this: http://www.amazon.com/Camco-35983-Quick-Permanent-By-Pass/dp/B0006JJ57Y

That is typically a spring loaded ball or lift check valve as opposed to a swing check valve. A swing check valve won't work as well in that application. They are usually a 1/2 fpt brass check valve that you can get from a local plumbing supply house. Lowes and Home Depot typically only have the swing style in that size. You could also replace it with a ball valve that you just have to remember to close when you activate the bypass valve.

Fair winds,

Jesse

My Catalina came with a water heater. I can't see any reason to heat hot water.
