First time I've used a reefed sail on H170 (bought "new" 2008 model w/ North Sail). Gail warning day, just me with a reefed mail only--had a great time for a couple of hours. Then the clew end reef line broke. I was only minutes down wind from the ramp, and had tied the bunched mid section to the boom loosely, which held most of the sail in place (except for the embarrassing flapping loose back end). Turns out the eyelet was a bit "off" and had a continuous sharp edge that sawed the line. I didn't think to check the new equipement for trouble like that.

I am somtimes lazy about leaving the reef just relying on the reefing line and not adding an extra piece if line to secure the clew. I have been warned that if the clew fails the reefing points can tear out because they are not made strong enough to take the forces in the sail. Of course it would always happen in a hard blow. Shame shame shame.....
