Because of a recent near disaster I'm posting a warning and would like to know if it is alright to wire the shackles. While singlehanding, fortunately with only the jib, during a jibe a strange pop occurred. As I looked around the mast appeared to have scoliosis. I noticed one of the lower shrouds was disconnected and quickly pulled in the jib. The shackle was still in place and holding the other line but the downed line was still in one piece so I know it had to have slipped off the shackle. Holding the boom steady I motored in and on inspection and repair it was very apparent that the shackle has been open for some time because of the stains and the thread damage. It is a quarter inch thick and was bent out of shape as well. There was no cost to the repair, just the loss of a couple hours of sailing for that day. I know I could have easily lost at least the mast in many other circumstances. I am so glad it happened on a calm day which were rare in the month of June. What I would like to know is whether it is okay to use either zip-ties or stainless steel wire or is there some other method for securing the shackle pins in place? There is a hole in the end of the pin which seems ideal for securing it. Any suggestions and advice are appreciated.

Do it!

Great question. Don't pass GO! Don't collect $200. Use SSwire or small SScotter pins and bend them over. Sounds like you learned the lesson in a relatively painless way. Good sailing.

monel seizing wire

proper seizing wire is made of monel, and is sold as such. Monel is more corrosion proof and less brittle than SS. This is the purpose of the hole in the pin. Don't forget the shackles on the anchor rode. If you are refering to the turnbuckles, however, use SS cotter pins or rings, and then wrap them with rigging tape to prevent sails from being snagged on them.
