The head sink drain thru hull in my 1980 H30 is right at the water line, when it failed this spring I was pretty worried about it taking on water and was able to replace the thru hull in the water. Is the H33 1979 thruhull below the waterline?

was this a result of neglect in not closing the seacock while off the boat?
Don, The factory setup was a nylon through hull about 2 inches above the "Factory" waterline and no seacock. To make it even better the factory used 1 1/2 inch hose clamped directly over the threads of the through hull so they did not need an adapter on the sink outlet, they just clamped right over those threads.

Steve, sorry about your boat!

Steve, sorry about your boat!

I am not so certain that my boat needs to be pitied; on the other hand, I am accepting condolences for my inability to precisely ascertain its long term seaworthiness or more precisely “lakeworthiness.”

Thanks for your concern; any and all suggestions are appreciated.

It looks like I will be accepting the boat this coming Monday, tomorrow, wow that soon. Well, I do like the overall appearance of the boat and will continue to pray for her safety. . . if only I knew how fragile she is or is not.

Thanks,
Steve

That's a real tragedy, my sympathies. And thanks for posting, a serious wakeup call. On my H37C the thru-hull comes out the middle of the bootstripe. And there is no valve, just good hose with two clamps. But those nylon thru-hulls are prone to age and crack. A bronze thru-hull with valve just moved to the top of my to-do list. Good luck with the salvage and repairs.

Thats a good point about aging, I wonder if it's worth replacing these all when I haul next. The reason for my head thru hull failing was that the hose in the head was busted and I needed to replace it, when I went to try to get the 30 year old hose clamps off with just a little pressure the thru hull just disintegrated in my hands... it was old and brittle.

thru hulls

I was a little luckier...ok a lot luckier. When I had an survey, about 6 years ago, the surveyor found the same thru hull cracked. I replaced it with a bronze one, new hose to the sink and then he also required me to double clamp everything below the waterline and recommended everything above. I did. The following fall, I went to remove the raw water intake hose that goes to the engine to add some grease to it. I barely touched the thing and it fell apart. I could have farted on it and it would have crumbled. Given that, every one of my thru hulls has been replaced or very thoroughly gone over (with a hammer) to insure integrity. I took my thru hull set up to the chandlery and the guys there kinda laughed and said "you would think these things would last more than 20 years..." Sorry about the loss it is a really dumb place for the sink thru hull when it could have been just as easily plumbed to the shower sump.

Through hulls at or below the waterline should all be made of bronze not plastic,(No matter what anyone says) and be checked every year. When I lived up north, I checked every through hull and ball valve before it went in the water each spring. I also made sure that there was a ball valve on every through hull at or below the waterline. It's a cheap price to pay for a little safety.

Very sorry to hear about the calamity. Best of luck with reclamation.

Reminds me of my H33 years ago which had been a salt water bolt. One day while draining the galley sink my feet got soaked. Inspecting underneath, I discovered the chrome drain extension had corroded through and the drain pipe was lying against the cabinet wall, completely detached from said sink. And this while sitting at a dock no less. Had this happened while I was away and had the pipe end rested below the waterline, mine too would have sunk. I was just very lucky. I think every Cherubini owner is going to be checking hoses, drain extensions and throughhulls this week!

Removing the forward sink and glassing over the hole is one of my fall projects. I don't like the "no sea cock slightly above the water line" installation, and on a 27 foot boat the galley sink is only 8 feet away, what a waste of space AND extra hole in the hull.

I plan on taking the entire thing out and building a hanging locker across from the head.

Good warning though for those who have this set up.

"Edit" I do like the ideal of installing a shower in this location drained to the bildge sump. I may look at that option too. Thanks for the idea :)

Have a 1978 - 33' Hunter and was working on same issue last week. My head sink thru-hull is about 2" above waterline and has no shut off but the sink is another 6-8" above that. I plan on changing to bronze thru-hull w/valve in near future as I am in the Keys and when moored for a storm, it is nice to be able to close her up.
