Cheapie Depth Sounders

Does anyone have any opinions/thoughts/experiences with the inexpensive(under $150) depth sounders on the market. It seems that Norcross, Humminbird, and Uniden have similar units with either thru-hull or transom mounting. Are any of these worth the expense? Your thoughts are appreciated.

I installed the norcross one, less that $100 on ebay. The one touted for jet skis. It worked well for 2 1/2 years. It either took on water or I inadvertently hit it during mr. toads wild ride back from Cat Island several weeks ago. Now the display is gone. Still, it worked and for the money...

I bought a reconditioned system foir about $80 a few years back from Uniden. It was a transducer that you mount on the inside of the hull and a circular gague that mounts wherever. I mounted the "ducer" near the bow and ran the line to the cockpit where I mounted the gague. I use it as a secondary to the main through Hull transducer that is mounted in the aft area of the boat. Using both I pick my way through at times. Nice for a backup. It is a digital readout. Works good.

The cheaper the better, just less features is all.

another thought

Try bedding the ducer in toilet seal wax $.99 (new not used) and shooting thru your solid glass hull (can't shoot thru wood or air ), even the transom mount ducers will work this way.
This will allow you to experiment with locations for best results, the wax can be permanent or temporary

Update: I had the Hawkeye model from norcross marine. Lists for $100, got the refurb unit 2 yrs ago for $57.00. Just called Norcross. They will repair/replace the display with a better one, with improved display and soidering, for $30 plus shipping. Good unit, good service. Can't beat the price. http://www.norcrossmarine.com/
