Recycled cabin sole protection
Okay, this one is literally a white trash solution. Here in the Great Pacific Northwest, wetness rules much of the year. Cardboard and newspaper make terrific matting to keep water from laying too long on the cabin sole.
In the picture you can see me standing on the steps looking down at the sole. When I'm working I have the cardboard spread out a little more, but I had just finished cleaning up and the stuff was in two piles. If you have about four layers of cardboard (which equals two small flattened cardboard boxes), they will soak up water from your feet, soak up grease, and dry quicker than just about anything else. If they get too wet, just lean them up sideways and they will dry without keeping the sole wet. Often just the top layers will get wet, always keeping the sole dry.
Rubber matted carpeting (which I have in dryer areas) holds moisture against the wood flooring and that is very bad if water gets under it. It will hold the water under there almost permanently. Non-matted carpets slip around too much for my liking.
The newspaper works well as part of the mix and can be used to clean greasy hands also. It soaks up lots of water and is the perfect thing for handy hand wiping when on the greasiest jobs, much cheaper than rags or paper towels. When I'm working on wet greasy jobs, I have sections of newspaper laying on the sole with the cardboard.
All the cardboard I'm using is simply cardboard that I had brought on board with some part or appliance, so I just disassembled and flattened it out instead of throwing it away. I keep it near the base of the steps there all year either out or hidden. It can be quickly pulled out to soak sudden wetness from the galley or wet feet from the cockpit, or just left out there to catch the wetness right away...depending on your own personal affinity for people seeing your white trash solutions.
