take a look at the 714s and see if you like it they are a little pricey but they dont have a door just a cover that snaps on....

Check out Raymarine and Furuno.
The later is preferred overwhelmingly by professional mariners.

We're done with Garmin. Lies like"we never heard that before", " You need to ground your compass" and "the milliamps flowing thru the unit will affect your compass more than the magnet" have convinced me that this is not a company to be giving my business to.
I'm not going to make the effort to check, but I am told that doing so voids the warrantee on brand new units.

My Raymarine C-80 does not use a magnet for the chip door,did you go to WM and check them out yet.

All marine equipment should have a quoted "Compass Safe Distance". If your chosen unit does not show this in the manual (on line?) then ask Garmin for it.
Compass Safe Distance is the distance away from the object at which a compass will not deviate by more than 5.4°. i.e. within the range of being compensated for - and not too bad if not!
Garmin will, of course, be very aware of the potential problem and it seems likely that, when the door is closed, there will be very little radiated magnetic field.
If Garmin have overlooked this issue then they will have some head scratching to do!

Re: Nowhere NEAR your compass...
I was just checkin with a small pocket compass and a cabinet door magnetic latch. A small piece of steel bridging the magnet significantly reduces the magnetic interferrence. Try it with the case closed and then with the case open to see if there is a substantial change.
