We are chartering a 43' Nauticat out of Anacortes in September for 7 days. We will probably follow their one of their 'recommended' 7 day itineraries that includes: Anacortes to Lopez Island, Friday Harbor; Roche Harbor; Reid Harbor (Stuart Island); Sucia Island; Rosario Resort; Hunter Bay (Lopez Sound)

Any recommendations?
What yacht clubs at these locations?

Thanks,

Michael

I haven't been in the San Juans in some time, but I can recollect some of the Yacht Clubs. (I think). In Anacortes there are Anacortes, Fidalgo, and Flounder Bay Yacht Clubs. In Eastsound there is the Orcas Island YC, and in Friday Harbor there is the San Juan Island Yacht Club. If I remember correctly Orcas Is. has a moorage dock but not too many amenities, but you should be able to go around the island by bus, through town and all the way around to Rosario. Friday harbor is always crowded and the YC has only 2 end tie slips that require you to accept rafting. They put 6 boats in those spaces. That's all I can remember off hand.

Anyone else?

All the destinations listed on the recommended itinerary are nice destinations for a first visit. I would recommend you buy a Waggoner's Guide or the "Gunkholing in the San Juan Islands" book (by Bailey and Nyberg) if you want some local color and history of the places. These will give you good ideas for alternate destinations and places to anchor for lunch.

To use yacht clubs in the area, your club would have to have reciprocal privileges. Waggoner's lists the yacht clubs and yacht club outstations. Check your yacht club listing for clubs with reciprocal privileges. In any case, most of the marinas in the islands are well-kept and well run.

For your first day (Anacortes to Lopez Island) I would recommend you stay at Spencer Spit State Park, either on a mooring buoy or at anchor. The north side of the spit is exposed to ferry wakes, but that isn't too big a deal. The park and beach make for a great on-shore excursion.

On your way to Friday Harbor, anchor in Indian Bay (Shaw Island) for lunch, and then continue to FH, which is the hub of the islands, with a well-maintained but busy marina.

Roche Harbor is very protected and pretty, good for anchoring or staying in the marina. The upscale resort is very quaint. The jet set keeps their boats here during the summer.

Reid Harbor (Stuart Island) is a state park, and a very nice quiet anchorage. There are hiking trails. This is one of my favorite spots. It is a short motor or pleasant day sail from Roche.

I've only anchored at Sucia Island, but most people consider it a must-see.

Rosario Resort is only partially open this season, and both the mansion and the marina will be closed after Labor Day according to thier site (http://www.rosarioresort.com/), so you'll probably want to plan another stop or just stay another day enjoying Sucia.

Enjoy your days in the islands!

I try to include Blakely Island Marina every time I sail the San Juans. It's one of my favorites and seems to be the areas best kept secret. You'll have to watch the tides to get in and out.

All of us have opinions, so here are mine. My wife and I miss cruising the NW after moving to CA. To us, it's the best cruising anywhere. If I was going to take a trip to my favorites, they would be:

1. Reid Harbor (Stuart Island): Best anchorage period. Lot's of room, Water depth seems to average about 25 feet. Good hiking. Did I mention, lot's of room? Protected unless the wind is SE, but have always had smooth nights.

2. Spencer Spit : Moorings or anchor. It really does have bunny rabbits running around.

3. Hunter Bay: The easiest place you'll ever anchor. The entire bay is about 12 feet deep, with the best holding I have ever experienced. Lots of room.

4. Blind Bay (Shaw Island): Another great anchorage, good protection, lots of room

5. Sucia Island: Beauty, beauthy, beauty. Anchor in Shallow Bay (best protection). Echo Bay has tons of room, but avoid if SE is forecast.

6. Garrison Bay (Near Roche Harbor): a somewhat winding channel (Mosquito Pass) to enter, but another great spot to anchor and hike. very protected.
