I would like to hear opinions on recommended reliable chart plotters that also show the depths

Most are pretty reliable. The bigger issue is what type of depth sounder do you already have and I'd recommend sticking with that brand for all your instrimentation. Just makes intigration easier.
With that said the industry is going to NMEA 2000 so if ALL your instriments can talk NMEA 2000 you should be OK. course cabling to and from the NMEA 2000 backbone can be a hassel, which brings us full circle and sticking with one brand.

I have a Raymarine C-80 and love it and yes no longer made but can be found on
E-bay at nice prices and uses Navionics chip which also like and have Navionics on my
Tablet and Iphone and all my instruments are also Ray and had Ray on my other Sailboats.
The only thing I wish it had bluetooth for the tablet and Iphone.

Like Bill said, it's best to stay with one brand. I just happen to have Standard Horizon Gx2150 vhf so I got a SH chartplotter/fisher finder. I don't have either installed yet so can't comment on if I like or not.

Are you asking that it show the charted depths or are you looking for a dual unit with a plotter and depth sounder. These are more expensive and when it goes you loose both the GPS and the depth sounder. Most chart plotters are pretty reliable and most maps will show the charted depths. I usually carry a handheld unit for backup and to have the anchor alarm right in the berth.

I am pretty sure you will need to have a depth transducer to send the depth to the chartplotter
so may as well have a depth gauge any way and most new boats come with depth gauge and maybe a chartplotter but they are both extra options.

What size of boat will it be on as you may not want a 10" screen on a 22 foot boat or a 4" screen on a 45 foot boat. Knowing the size will now give you a price range ie 4" $500-$700, 10" $1200-$3500 both will do the same. But most boats will have Raymarine or Garmin. I have 2, Ray 435 and C-70. but if I need to change out my current system I would be looking at Garmin 7610 andt with all the addon's the price will be close to $8000 that's on a 32 foot boat.

Just curious - was the "channel depth" shown on the handheld based on chart soundings, or on actual (real-time) soundings while on the boat? Any decent chart-plotter will do the first; the second requires a transducer.

actually not sure iknow it showed depth I assume it was chart depth because they had gotten stuck before but it did show previous routes they had taken. I already have depth finder and really liked their handheld

By handheld do you mean like an app on a phone or tablet or like a hiking GPS that you can put marine charts on? I've had really good experiences using the Navionics app on my ipad -- you get access to different depth layers (Navionics chart, Sonarchart, and govt chart) that you can swap between so you can get a really good feel for the bottom profile. And you can overlay satellite images too for even more definition. It can also link into my vexilar unit so I can have the depth sounder displayed along with the chart. For a handheld option, I think the app is definitely worth looking into if you haven't already
