The engineers had good ideas, but the company actually had no interest. They just wanted to figure out new ways to milk their old technology. Even very modest efforts to improve were actively shut down - in one case (and I am not kidding about this) - it would have made the product "too futureproof".

That's classic stuff today. Buy out any small guys who actually innovate, and have become a threat to the business model.
Futureproof is against planned obsolescence which is a cash cow (along with software subscriptions)

Yeah. It would be hypocritical of me to complain too much, since I've benefitted from being that small guy and selling out. So, if I'm honest, I'm part of the problem.

I definitely don't have a problem with someone being successful creating products and innovation. My issue is the larger companies that have no interest in continuing that effort after they acquire the competition.
