Has anybody else had a failure with the Charleston spars on their H410. We have a 1998 model and the weld joining the spreader to the mast has cracked. Another H410 in the same fleet has the same problem.

Spar Failure in H410

We discovered the failure in the annual rig check done by the charter company.

Charleston Mast

How often did the charter company check the rig and tune the rig? Having spent quite a few years in the rigging business, this sounds more like the results of poor tuning practices and not product defects. Especially with the B&R style rigs. The reverse diamonds pose different stresses on a rig than a conventional rig. While the B&R style rig is very strong, attention to tuning the mast is important. It was probably tuned when the boat was new, but after a couple years(even one good Season)the wire will stretch and the rig will need to be tuned. A loose rig or out of column rig can be structurally damaged when sailing in heavy air or tacking alot. If your rig is still standing, it should be possible to pull the mast and repair it by a qualified yard. Good Luck.
