Has anyone have one of these on their boat. For some reason I can't seem to get it to work. I checked the breaker that is OK. I cross the wire and they sparked. But when I put the Breaker on the Charger shows no sign of working. Any ideas.

Cheers

PS. The second photo show this Zinc Saver. Does this take the place of the ones that are on the heat sink and hot water heater ????

Thanks Stu.

I'm replacing my 2X4D's for 4x6 Volt Golf cart batteries in parallel. Now my dilemma is what charger I replace the C-Charger 50000 20 Amp with. Boy what a learning curve a boat is !!!

Cheers

2OP,

That is a Charles Industries 20 amp 5000 SP Series charger. But it doesn't matter. Get ride of it. That is not a multi-stage smart charger. That is an old dumb charger.

For a replacement, look at the 50 amp ProMariner ProNautic charger. You can get the same charger with a Sterlin sticker on it too. Don't get the cheaper brands like Xantrex.

Absolutely do the temp sensor for the batteries when you do the install. I highly recommend you install the remote panel as well. I have mine at the nav station and it is a very useful tool.

While you are at it, consider installing a battery monitor.

I just went through this debate with myself via Maine Sail's forum when my 4 year old Xantrex blew for no reason.

Here is the writeup from my blog on my battery upgrade on our C310.

The other device is a galvanic isolator. You should read this article from Maine Sail on testing galvanic isolators to make sure they are working properly.

Let me know if you have any questions.

By the way, you will love the upgrade to the 4 golf cart batteries. We can go up to 5 days right now without charging. We have the refer on all the time and our TV, laptop and iPad are all 12 volt along with 12 volt fans (5 installed and 3 running most of the time).

Good luck and fair winds,

Jesse

Jesse - If you don't already have it, a blog post on power / battery management might be useful along with pictures of your monitoring equipment. I know that electrical is an area (along with weather, unfortunately) where I am weak. My first boat only had a single battery and so I tend to be way conservative on recharging my batteries (I'm on a mooring with no solar or wind generator). A first hand article on power / battery management (especially from a live-aboard) would be of interest to many, I'd bet.

Sounds like a good idea. I am working out a few issues with my battery monitor. Once I get that fixed I can get some better detailed info. I will write something up then. The solar panels should be up in the next week or two as well so I can add that to the mix.
