Who has the oldest copy of Chapman's Piloting? I bought mine new for $11.95.Chapmans.jpg I think that it was 1978.

I understand the first edition was first published as Practical Boat Handling in 1917 with 144 pages. From this, the book evolved through many editions into Piloting, Seamanship & Small Boat Handling. The book title was later shortened to Chapman Piloting & Seamanship. Chapman Piloting - Wikipedia

I got mine as a gift in 1968 for teaching a Lieutenants wife how to sail.
I doubt that it is a "First Edition".

I lost two copies in a house fire .. I had a 1978 ish one that I got when I bought my first boat then I got the original 1985 ish one that Hunter included with the boat when PO bought it. Both of those were lost so I have a 2006 vintage now. It is a great reference book to have around.

I had to go check the Library. I moved a 45 vinyl record off the book (A taste of Honey). It has been a while since I pulled the book off the shelf. No time like winter to remind oneself about the skills of seamanship.

I get mine at library book sales when they purge the stacks. I try to find the most recent one possible because the Coast Guard does change the rules from time to time. (Loran and RDF are not as helpful as they once were, and not much manilla line is around any more, either.) My 1991 copy is marked $5. Will need to get a newer one.

Can't find my Chapman's but do have:
Bowdich - American Practical Navigator 1962 Edition
Dutton's - Navigation & Piloting 1969 Edition

My Chapman's is probably an edition sometime prior to 1969

Mine also 56th Edition, 1983. My dad bought it as a birthday gift when I moved to Waco, Texas and was sailing a Scorpion 16 on Canyon Lake. I only focused on Rules of Navigation; got bored trying to relate the standing and running rigging nomenclature to my little wet sailer, with 1 “rope“ and tiller control. I did add a fairlead and cam cleat so I could free up a hand for a cold beer though, and sailed the evil out of that boat.
