Changing the clinometer

My boat is a 1993 23.5 and I have noticed that the clinometer on my boat has become quite sluggish. We will be at a minor heel and the gauge will read zero until we're at a good heel (over 15 degrees) then it will suddenly begin to read. I presume it's time to change the meter out. It's the standard black Lev-o-gauge meter. What is the best way to remove the existing gauge before I stick the new one on?

Take it off, you really don't need it. They seem to cause anxiety with many crew who would otherwise be fine. It serves no other function.

My most accurate clinometer is what WayneH refers to as the "Squeal-O-Meter." Wife lets me know when I'm leaning too much.

I see what you guys are saying. How do I take off the old one without leaving marks or adhesive on the bulkhead?

Exactly, I sometimes wonder what degree I'm heeling. There is a clinometer on the bottom of my old compass, but its faded and hard to read. However, I do have a heeling warning system. It has never failed to prevent a round-up or broach let alone a knockdown. It starts out with a soft "honey" then as the heel increases a louder "HONEY" then finally a Loud "BRAD!" I do sometimes find it necessary to do a Quality Analysis of the system. Lo and behold it NEVER fails.

Dang.. you have the exact same warning system I do!! A bit pricey, but very dependable

As for the original question.. how is your current meter attached? If it's just attached with some sort of adhesive, a good thin putty knife used carefully followed with some wd40 or 'goof-off' to remove the left over residue should work fine.

Thanks. I think it's just the adhesive that comes with the meter in the first place. Looks like a foam double sided tape.
