I just purchased 85 28.5 and would like to change the name. At the dock taking the old name off another sailor told me that it was bad luck and that there was a ceremony you had to do. Talked to another sailor who said this was a superstition from along time ago, because people were afraid of the gov't searching and harrassing them if they changed the boat name. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks, Robert McClellan

One version of the story

The lore I heard concerning this is that a vessel becomes a personality and obtains a soul from King Neptune during christening. To change the name of a boat is bad luck because the vessel's soul is still there but has been insulted/shamed with a new name that does not match the personality of the christened name. To avenge the original vessel's soul, King Neptune, or the vessel itself, would plague the owners with numerous minor problems that eventually turned into major problems, then into a sinking usually of the gruesome, horrific kind with all hands on board and lost. To prevent this nightmarish series of events, the owner should properly advise King Neptune that the owner respects the soul provided to the vessel, but needs to change the name to also respect the wishes of the landlubbers. King Neptune, wanting to maintain proper relations with the landlubbers and the associated gods, allows two means of doing this: 1) Rechristening the same soul with a new name that is somewhat related to the same personality. 2) Recommit the vessel's soul/name to King Neptune and respectfully request a new soul/name be given to the honorable vessel. In either case a proper ceremony is required with either champagne or appropriate wine. Appropriate is determined by both season and the reception dinner main course. Check the archives for the renaming ceremony. (It's great excuse for opening a LOT of champagne!) Michael O'

And don't forget

After you read the archives and get the ceremony, be sure to buy the boat a present (clock, new GPS, handheld vhf, etc) and don't skimp on the booze you pour on the hull, that is, don't let the boat catch you pouring a Miller Light on the bow while you are sucking down an Anchor Steam! We are renaming this spring, I am also planning on using a virgin to help with the ceremony, but it's been a long winter up here in Illinois and one never knows!

changing the boats name

we wanted to change the name of our H 34and came to find after some research that there is a service here that you can get. The choice of catholic, protestant, or jewish. the catholic and protestant services are very similar with the priest or pastor holy water and all that goes with it. the rabbi however, ends with cutting off the tip of your antenna.
