Changing motors

Was considering changing Perkins diesel motor to Yanmar....appears that there is not enough room to remove old motor to replace with new? Is there a proceedure to do this or a common method to change this motor? Also an considering changing generating plants. Any info would be appreciated...Thanks

The "common method" is to strip the engine of as many spare parts as possible, slide the engine on skids into the walkthrough then into the aft cabin and up the companionway. Removal of the steering station allows for a chain to be dropped through to the engine room for lifting, but some have done without it. A more extreme solution that some have done is to cut out the deck in the cockpit area and put in a new one after the engine work is done. I prefer the "common method." Regards, Mary

Yanmar

I looked at a lot of 415's, most of them with Perkins and was annoyed by the engine noise and vibration. I finally bought one that the prior owner had upgraded to a Yanmar 4JH2E, 51 horse. It starts immediately, runs quiet and vibration free and burns between 1/2 & 3/4 gallon per hour at around 2000 RPM. I presently have 2300 hours on it with no major repairs.

The Yanmar is a good engine, but depending on which size you are looking for you may want to consider the Beta Marine Kubota conversions. Another good engine, but no turbo in the 50+ HP sizes, more parts comonality, cheaper, and more sources.

changing motor

I drilled a 3" hole saw in the deck with a come-a-long to take weight off. Stripped engine as much as possible. Slid the engine out engine room with 2" x 4" . Remove out aft companionway with come-along attached to main boom. Make sure to put extra halyard on main boom. Able to move boom to side of boat and lower engine into cart. Used same method to reinstall engine.
