I have a Catalina 30 ('88 model) with the Universal M-18 and the Hurth model HBW-50 transmission. I was planning on changing out the .29 quarts of fluid, but it looks like it could be tough without accessing the bottom drain plug. I will assume then that using a plastic tube for removal as with the engine oil is the way to go. Since this is a first time for me, can anyone provide any information from their experiences as to the best procedure. Do you run it hot before fluid drain since its high viscosity? The tranny seems to be on a slight angle as well. Thanks Bob '88 Catalina 30 Mark II

No need to heat it like for oil

Do it from the top with a tube as you suggest. Measure how much you take out and replace in kind. Before you start, check the level. The top dip stick needs to be resting loosely on the top of the casing, NOT screwed it, to measure the level. It's hard to see on the stick, so when you take it out, lay it on a paper towel and you can see the level better. Don't overfill.

Changing transmission fluid

Bob-- I've got the same transmission in my 84 C27. Changing from the top through the dipstick tube is the way to go. Stu is right, check the level before changing, and do it with the cap resting on top of the dipstick hole, not screwed all the way in. I can't say if it makes any significant difference if the fluid is hot or cold. I've done it both ways, and there is so little fluid in there, it comes out quickly either way. Be sure not to overfill--this is critical. And, keep it super clean--you don't want any dirt, grime, or lint in the trans. Randy

That's right

Hi Bob, Stu and Randy's instructions are right on...only thing I can add is that I did "the drain and fill" 2 times to minimize the amount old fluid that was left behind. Since its such a small amount of fluid I figured, why not. Let me know if you want a hand...I'll be out there in the next few weeks. Stephen

Thanks Stephen

Stephen. Appreciate the help. I bought the tranny fluid, filler funnel and have a baster with tube attached. So I am ready to go and will take your recommendation on purging two times to clear all the old stuff out. Thats just a start to my list of maintenance items!! Lakes filling up, so thats great news. I'll see ya up there. Thanks Bob PS. At the Atlanta boat show last month, some Catalina 34 folks were claiming that they intended on consolidating all Catalina's on the lake for one big club! So far I have yet to hear anything more although I agree with the idea.
