Hello all,
I'm about to replace the pump mechanism on my Jabsco head.
Any tips on keeping any mess to a minimum and making it a "non-event"?
The holding tank is near empty.
Do I need a respirator and full body suit?;)

No need for a respirator, no need for another Jabsco. Do yourself a favor and install a Raritan head.

Hello all,
I'm about to replace the pump mechanism on my Jabsco head.

Step 1. (seems fairly obvious, but just in case...) Close the intake seacock!

Step 2: (also seems fairly obvious to me, but it doesn't seem to occur to very many others)
Rinse out the pump with lots of clean fresh water. If you're in a salt water, this may
require removing the intake line from the thru-hull and sticking it into a bucketful of
clean fresh water.

Step 3: Pump in the dry mode till you've pumped all the water out of the pump.

Step 4: Now you can replace the pump. If you've done all the above it should be an easy
CLEAN job that only requires removing and replacing 4 screws and 4 hose
connections. If your toilet has only two hose connections, proceed to Step 5:

Step 5: Install the missing vented loop between the pump and the bowl. See the toilet
installation instructions for location and installation details.

Once I removed my old head with the procedure above from Peggy, I replaced just the pump unit with a Raritan PH II available here at the Store. You can save some money by re-using your bowl and the new unit (also recommended by Peggy) gives a more efficient (50%) inlet and discharge volume. It was a very good upgrade.

Allan's right. Raritan makes three models:

The PHII - the whole kit and kaboodle

The PHC - same thing only smaller bowl and no skirt around the bottom

The LBA - the pump only, you use your old bowl

Thank you all for all the great advice.
I am replacing the pump and valve unit only now, hoping the Raritan fresh water flush unit will be available and not too expensive by next season.
Can't locate the manuals anywhere on the Jabsco website, very strange.
Not sure there is a looped vent, will look next weekend.
Hadn't thought of pumping fresh water thru the intake. I was just going to pour in fresh water and pump that.
