Changing Depth Transducer

I'm getting ready to pull my C30 to do the bottom and need to change the depth transducer. How is this mounted into the hull? I know it's different from the knot meter. Is some type of sealant used? Do you dig out the old one? Thanks in advance.

principles are the same

Though the thru-hall transducers may look different, the principles behind their proper installation are the same. The first job will be getting the old transducer out of the hull. Depending upon what sealant was used by the previous owner, this will be relatively difficult or incredibly hard. I had to cut mine out, in small pieces, with a Dremel tool because the previous installation had used 3M 5200 sealant. I strongly recommend that you use #M 4200 sealant instead, in case you ever want to remove the transducer for any reason.

Questions

John - You will find many answers to this exact question in the archives of this website. Just search under "transducer." Now - what type of transducer do you have? Is it a through hull type, which actually extrudes through the hull, like a seacock, or is it a "Shoot thru hull" type, which is merely bonded to the inside of the hull? Rob

Rob, It's a Thru-Hull

Thanks for the tip on the archives. I'll go there now.

You won't believe this, but it's true!

I had a similar problem ad decided to not futz with the old thru-hull type transducer but went to a "shoot through the hull" type. I was in a hurry and didn't want to permanently bond it until I was sure I had the right location. I tried a trick that a friend recommended which is to mount the new transducer to the inside of the hull with toilet bowl wax (that beeswax-like ring)! That was 4 years ago and I've never got around to permanently mounting it. It works just fine.
