I am looking for instructions on how to change out or replace a Racor fuel line filter. I have not done this and I am looking for general directions. I have acquired a new 10 micron filter which will replace a 30 micron filter. I do know you must turn off the fuel line supply and remove the filter, but what else do I need to be aware of or thinking about when I replace? Thanks, Greg W.

fuel filter replacement

. close fuel supply . open drain on filter to partially drain content . remove filter from housing and separate from bowl . clean bowl . replace all hand tight and manually fill bowl and filter before reinstalling if you can - makes bleeding quicker . prime fuel line clean up the mess

Hi Greg, Don I think nailed the procedure...

The only other consideration is whether your engine has one of the spin on fuel filters like ours has. I would replace it as well. While you're at it locate the fuel pump priming lever. It will help to bring fresh fuel from the tank, through the Racor filter bowl and to the engine thus minimizing engine cranking. Terry

Finer filter element?

I have a Racor primary filter, model # 120RMAM, with a R12PUL element. According to Racor's site, this is a 30 micron element. My Yanmar 3YM30F has a secondary filter on the engine, but Yanmar's site doesn't specify the rating, though I suspect it's a very fine element. I haven't been able to find a 30 micron R12PUL - would the 10 micron put me too close to what's already on the engine?

Thanks

Terry & Don: Thanks for your assistance! Yes, I will be changing the regular fuel filter above the Yanmar in addition to the Racor. I believe that is a 20 micron filter. The Racor is located down in the hell hole of the Starboard Lazarette. At 6' - 2" and 220, it is always fun squeezing down there and working. It was actually quite intimidating when I first acquired the boat, but now I get down inside of there in under 30 seconds! Greg W.

I think the '83 has a Yanmar 2GM18 or 2GM20 engine with a 2 micron filter on the engine ; you didnt say what model fuel filter you have between the tank and the lift pump. Some Raycor's have a built in priming pump, but there was a Fram 110 on some 2GM's. The mid '80's 2GM's are not self bleeding, so it's a good idea when you replace the secondary to fill the canister with fuel and then replace the primary 2 micron element and use themanual lift pump lever on the starboard side topump fuel to the primary until a solid stream if fuel with no air bubbles comes out of the bleed screw. Always use a new nylon or copper washer on the bleed screw to keep things tight after a filter change.
