Hello: I had the same problem and fixed it by replacing all the screws with
#14 stainless. I think the originals were 4 1/4 (or metric equivalent). I
found 4" screws and recessed them on the interior by counterboring with a
countersink on the drill press. This allowed the threads to fully engage on
the exterior rail. Make sure you drill the proper size holes in the teak
rails so that they don't split and to ease driving. All is much stronger
now. Altenatively, you could throughbolt the rails and plug the head on the
exterior, but this is easier and faster. Most industrial screw and bolt
suppliers will have or can get the screws. If not, let me know and I can get
them from my source here in Portland. Fair winds, Bill Bach, 1071

Chuck,I need all the help from the e-group. I'm rehabing the vega and I'm redoing theexterior grab rails. Mine are attached thru the cabin ceiling grab rails,thru the lid and into the exterior grab rails. The screws are 4 1/2 " brass, #12, slotted with oval heads. Three of the eight snapped while I was removing them. I got them out with an easy out and am refinishing the wood, but.;;;;;;;;;
I have tried San Diego,Seattle and New Hampshire for replacement screws and am without luck. Any one out there have a source. Stainless would be ok.I'll go with eight of anything that will match. Evidently the 4 1/2" is a problem.

Thanks Bill Bach. I'll pursue your alternative. I'll keep the metal exposed on the interior with the screws and not bother with the thru-bolt. Still chasing the lookalikes.

Dave,

I think those screws are probably silicon bronze, not brass. I don't
think brass is strong enogh for that application. I found them at
the local marine chandlery here in Honolulu (Kilgo's). they usually
have them in stock but when I stopped by on my lunch break a couple
of hours ago they were temporarily out of stock in that size. I
think that that type of hardware is used in wooden boat building so
you might check with someone who does that. Also, Davies & Co in the
UK handles a lot of bronze hardware. A long way to go for a handful
of screws that would probably wind up costing $50 or more. I have
thier catalog at home so if you want to go that route let me know.

FWIW, I have been using bronze hardware where ever possible on my
Lealea. The stainless stuff I have put on the boat since I've owned
her has all rusted except for the Sta-Lok rigging fittings. The
original stuff that came with the boat is all fine but you can spot
the SS bits that are new replacements because thay're all rusty d:^(

Aloha,

Chuck

Chuck, if you can let me know about the screws or the supplier to Kilgo's I'll pursue them on the mainland. All I need are eight. Could you give me a outside date to which you could have them delivered to Kilgo's and a price or as I mentioned, I can chase them at this end. #12s 4 1/4" slotted with oval heads.. This week Iv'e been all over the west coast and most of new England in pursuit of the screws. The usual response is "only 3' inches in that # and no brass or silicon brass . in #14 we have 4 1/2 " stainless only, flat phillips."

Thanks
Dave
