Change mast compression post?

Perhaps an odd question, but it's the one thing I really don't like about the MK-II.
That compression post in the center of the passageway.
I'm not as young as I once was alleged to be.
Bending around that post is a pain.
I've been wondering about changing it out to a double post like the older boats use.

There is a bridge built into the cabin top. And it must be pretty solid to take the compression of the mast on the post.

So the first question is - how much difference is there between Mk-I and Mk-II in the structure under the mast.
If worse came to worse a layer of say 1/2" thick G-10 would be easy to add under the bridge for the dual posts.

Has anyone else given this any thought?

Do we have any prints of the layup schedule for that area?

I have not given this any thought yet other than being annoyed like you about the post in the way.

Don't forget it is not only the top but also the bottom where the 2 posts sit that needs to be looked at....

Will follow this discussion closely.....

I tell you what. I'm a young 68 and I'll swap you even for my MK I Capri # 427
A lot easier then modifying your boat.

Tempting....
Where are you? And what's the sail inventory look like?
:)

As for the post mod?
The 18 and 22 are pretty similar. The "posts" are 1" diameter Stainless Steel tubes with flanges bolted both ends.
The top flange is special - but the bottom one is a simple flat flange-thing.
The flanges have four screws into the glass.
The bottom flange sits on the edge of the V berth.
That edge has a pair of vertical surfaces for support and could be stiffened with a block glued in the corner
if the post had to be offset away from the edge for some reason.

This picture looks lit a 18. The 22's V bunk is a LOT longer...

See, if you draw an imaginary line straight up from the mast bridge on the cabin floor,
you come to the aft corner of the V-Berth.
Looks like everything is in the right place.
