We just purchased 1986 28.5 and it is extremely chalky...what are the recommended steps to bring boat back after sitting unattended for four years.

Several products that will help.

There are several products that you can use to clean your gelcoat. You can obviously compound the boat and then wax it. There are products that will help remove the oxidation and then you can use their acrylic coatings to make it shine. There are also other products on the market from companies like Aurora, Prism Polish & Island Girl Products that will help you restore the gelcoat. Some of these products are sold on this website too. You may want to look in the archives for some past posts on this subject.

If it's heavy.....

Compund then wax. If it's not too bad you can use one of the "color restorers", a light compound and wax in one. I recommend Dolphinite brand. Any boat wax by Mcguiers, 3M, Starbrite will do. You're gonna love your 28.5. Tom s/v Orion's Child

Lots of stuff in the archives

...on this subject. After you get done restoring your topsides, take a look at, and perhaps join, the H28.5 Website (see link). Lots of info on this model boat there, too. The site is a great place for owners to exchange info on what problems or issues they've had with their boats, and learn how others may have solved them. I also have an '86 and love it. Good luck with yours.

Compound & Wax

Last year I bought a gallon of 3M 5955 Super Duty Compound, about $50 at NAPA. It is NASCAR approved so it will probably make your boat faster! a large rotary polisher is best, although my large orbital works fine. Be careful of what types of products are OK for the buffer head. The distillate in the compound disolved the glue holding the layers of the head of my 6" polisher together. I later read the directions "WAX ONLY" One pass on the hull and topside used a half gallon on our 30' and a coat of Carnuba wax restored the luster even in the worst places. We think one more shot this spring will get it as good as it can be. We will then be religious about waxing both spring and fall each year.
