Hi All,

Redoing the deck this winter and have everything stripped. My chainplates (side stays) are bent slightly forward, and I'm wondering if this is normal for the 25. I have a feeling this was caused by having a bit too much tension on the side stays when stepping the mast. Because of this I'm considering replacing them. They seem to be in good shape though and I may be able to just straighten them.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Greg

Here is a link to the oem replacements....http://www.drmarine.com/proddetail.asp?prod=O23-026....they should be straight or flat....not sure how old your 25 is but several of us have had to replace bulkheads due to water intrusion at the chainplates causing dry rot in the bulkheads...I learned the hardway dismasting in 20kts and 18 degree heel....if you are going to change yours out it would be a great time to inspect the integrity of the bulkheads especially on the inside of the chainplate bolt holes....if you detect any rot or water staining of the area be cautious....if you have no problems then make sure and rebed the chainplate as it comes through the deck carefully so that you don't unknowingly create a spot for leakage.....

If your chainplates don't have a sharp bend in them, I would just remove them and bend them back nice and straight on a board with a rubber mallet. I think that it's safe to say that they probably got bent during the mast raising/lowering. Depending on which way they are bent, you're probably either going to need to loosen or disconnect a stay on each side of your boat when you raise/lower.
I have O'Day 25 chainplates on my 1986 O'Day 222 but I'm fortunate that I never need to touch the turnbuckles on either side of my boat when I raise/lower.

I agree with stx203, check the bulkhead I got de-masted in October lucklily it was at the dock but I had to replace the bulkhead and repair the deck where it tore through a lot easier than I thought. If you need to remove the bulkhead on the port side you need a ball jack and 2X4. After removing all the screws just lift the cabin by 1/4 -1/2 inch and it will slide out easily

Where is the best source for teak veneer marine grade plywood for bulkheads? Looking at an O'day 26 and I want to budget how much this is going to cost...sooner or later, I'll at least know. Also, how many sheets of 4x8 plywood? I don't own the boat yet so it's sort of hard to measure.

I just redid my bulkheads on my 77 O' Day 25 and used marine grade ply with a mahogany veneer applied to it. About $60 a sheet for the plywood, 1/2"x4x8, and the veneer was about $80 a 4x8 sheet. Not sure if this is all cheaper than teak veneer but, I figured it would give you a starting point at least. I used one sheet for each bulkhead. Need to factor in some epoxy to seal things up as well. I used CPES but if I had to do it again I would probably go with West System and 207 hardener. I put 3 coats of stain and poly on the veneer and painted the other side. Good luck!
