My O'Day 20 is in need of new chainplates...I have checked with DRMarine but the cost for them seems a "little pricey". Does anyone know any other place where I might find them or have them made?

Thanks

Could you describe dimensions of chainplates, and quantity needed? I may have what you need -- made from 1/8 in. S.S., 3/4 in. wide.

Jon,
I think that his side chainplates look like this one. These are same type that were on my OD 222. In fact, I still have them in my cellar. One of the bolts on one of mine is bent a little.

Yeah, I asked Rudy and his chainplates are only the u-bolt piece. They do not include the L-plate that connects to the bulkhead.

Brad,
The L brackets can crack and break. You're probably better off making your own L brackets and installing them on the bulkhead. I think that is what Chuck R (Lucky Bum) did on his boat "Get Away." I probably have the jpgs of them somewhere tucked away in the many emails that he had sent me. I've been going over all my sent emails that go back to 2005 on my PC and deleting them.

I'm ordering some SS tangs and fabbing up my own. I think I'd mentioned something to you about them earlier. Anyway, Those little 4" brackets just don't seem like enough real estate for me.

Jimmy,
Check out this web site. http://www.suncorstainless.com/ You may be able to buy two stainless steel square U-bolts and have them modified with stainless steel plates by someone who does S.S. welding. It's worth looking into. I've been to this factory in Plymouth Ma. and have their catalog. They manufacture quality marine hardware.

I think for the amount of stress that boats our size see, bending the SS isn't going to be a real danger. At least, that's what I plan on doing. All Rudy has are the ubolts, he does not have the brackets. I don't know what kind of timeline people here have, but I will probably have a couple of extras once I complete my boat (don't ask me when... but it should be some time this summer)

That is the one Joe! I ordered a set from Rudy(had to make a bank loan...lol)they were bigger than the originals. I had the L brackets but I had to drill to 5/16's to make the new ones fit. I would like to beef up those brackets though. FAir WinDs

Jimmy,
Here's some pics of how I beefed up my bulkhead. I think that with the chain plates that you're getting from Rudy and some good "L" brackets, you should be all set. Always stay with the same 1/8" shroud thickness and you shouldn't have a problem.

My chainplates fell apart when removing them and now I'm thinking of converting to the Catalina 22 1/2" eyebolt style and chainplte bracket.

I checked out those Catalina eye bolt type chain plates and I'm leery of them only because they need more reinforcement inside the cabin. A strut or an "L" type bracket needs to be attached to them as well something solid inside the cabin such as a bulkhead. When one of my old "L" brackets cracked inside the cabin, the surface under my chain plate was starting to bulge. I never really caught it at the time. I took my boat to Rudy at D&R Marine, and his business partner at the time, went into the cabin and found it and pointed it out to me. This prompted me to change my chain plates over to the flat bar type plate commonly used on O'Day 25s.

I like the idea of having a dedicated 1/2" eyebolt per shroud and large L bracket to better distribute the load. Both of my chainplates were one good gust away from coming through the deck.

If you can anchor it down in the cabin to something solid, I don't see why it won't work for you. The problem that I had after I went to the O'Day 25 chain plates was, water getting in around the chain plates and on to my main bulkhead. I solved that problem with metal covers welded to the chain plates. Knock on wood, I haven't had a problem since. There is never an easy way out though. As soon as you solve one problem, another one always creeps up.
