Has anyone rebuilt the forward / lower chainplate area on an O'Day 28 (mine is a 1985)? If yes, what mechanism spreads the chainplate load to the deck? I.E. how is this chainplate actually connected in the deck? A sketch or photo would be wonderful. I have had some slight leakage of water into the port side and plan to go a bit deeper into the core but would like to understand what I'm up against. The connection is still quite sound but it is something on my future todo list. This will be my 21st season with this boat and it has been absolutely terrific!

Photo in the reply shows the upper / aft lower chainplate area. I agree, this is stout design. I am interested in the forward lower shroud chainplate. There is no indication of any attachment inside the cabin that I can see. I suspect there is a plate in the core between the deck laminates but don't know for sure. Thanks for the reply.

Chain Plates on the 28
One of our yacht club members who owns an O'Day 25 just picked up an O'Day 28 at a very reasonable price. I haven't seen it yet but I'm real curious about it as I'm not too familiar with them. I've seen a few on moorings and I love the lines of them. Are you having some kind of an issue with these chain plates? Are they loose? Leaks? Unless you can talk to someone on the forum who has one, it may be worth your while to call Rudy. He would definately know. He worked in the factory at one time and bought all their stock plus their molds. He was even having the O'Days built in Bristol RI. I wish that I could help you. Good luck. Joe

Oday 28 chainplate problem
I just completed overhauling my 1985 O28 and was particularly intent to avoiding any leaks coming from any fixture (stancheon, chainplates, cleats, etc) that managed to get through the deck. I was at a loss to find the forward lower chainplates below the deck. Checking and someone in another forum advised that the chainplate was attached, as you surmised, to a plate within the deck. Fortunately, my investigation indicated the both lower chainplates were dry and not leaking. Otherwise, I was prepared to cut the deck around the chainplate and rebuild it. It was going to be a major job and I wasn't sure the results would match the rest of the non skid.

'79 Oday chainplates
My '79 Oday 28 has the chainplates secured as shown in Joe's picture. Very easy to get to, but I've never had any leaks or problems with them whatsoever. They are very strong and secure. I think they changed the configuration in later models though.

Chain Plates on the OD 28
RogKee, You and Joe R. are fortunate to have good solid chain plate mounts on your boats. The fact that you're not experiencing any leaking around your chain plates is a good indication that everything is solid and nothing is moving. I just don't think that a 1/2" bulkhead that isn't fiberglassed in, is a good anchor point for chain plates. I beefed my bulkhead up with solid oak and I'm glad I did. Hopefully, if we just keep an eye on these areas from time to time, we shouldn't have a problem. Joe
