I have both chain and nylon rope on my anchor rode. I also have an electric windlass with control for up and down in the cockpit. Have the recommended "back splice" for the rope to chain connection but I do not sleep easy. The splice goes over the windlass okay - with a little help - but I would prefer a long splice. Any comments on strength and or failures of each type would be much appreciated.

Maybe this can help

I picked this up from this site a while back and may answer some of your questions. http://www.bluemoment.com/warpchainsplice.html

This is what I use

As per the link supplied in the previouse post. I'm just not sure how good this splice is. Has anyone tested this splice over a few years and how well has it held???

Donalex, a good quality rope to chain splice should have 90-95% of the rope strength, so sleep tight! I have not tried the splice described on Paul's link

Chain/Rope splice - protection from chafe?

I have the same concerns that Donalex has. I do not doubt the strength of a new splice. However, I am very concerned that it will chafe where it attaches to the chain (chafe from the connection and from rubbing on the bottom). Traditionally the chafe is taken by a metal thimble in an eye splice on the rope and a shackle. Unfortunately. that arrangement doesn't run through the anchor roller (and winch) smoothly and the rope to chain does. However, I fear the rope to chain splice will fail due to chafe (in a hard blow in the middle of the night with a rocky shore downwind). Is there a way of protecting a rope to chain splice from abrasion at the joint?
