There seems to be quite a bit written about chain plate problems on the Catalina 30. We have a 1980 (hull #1851) with strap type chain plates. They have a lip under the deck welded onto the strap, presumably to provide added protection from pulling through the deck.

The replacement parts (from Catalina Direct) for the uppers look like the same parts we have now.

On later models the lower chain plates were changed to the u-bolt type. Now the only replacements seem to be the u-bolt type for the lowers.

My question is, do I need to change to the u-bolt style now for the lowers.

I would like some other opinions on this before I call Catalina Direct.

I recommend doing two things:

1. asking over on the C30 Association website - they have an email "List" and may even have a FAQ page, which would most likely cover this (they're simply more "specialized" in C30s than this 'board)

2. call CD on the telephone before you purchase anything and talk to them: they really know boats as well as parts.
