the chainplate leaks at the deck and the bolt below is starting to rust, can this be fixed without taking the mast down? If so, what tools do I need and how do I proceed.

I'd imagine you could take the shrouds off one by one securing them to the toe rail. I've seen someone do that before to work on the chainplate

I would relieve pressure on all the shrouds by turning each looser by 4-5 full turns so you don't risk distorting your mast. When you get your fix in, tighten each by the same amount as you loosened them and you are back at square one.

You can mark the turnbuckles with a piece of tape wrapped around the screw part where it touches the body on top.. then loosen slowly (maybe two turns loose then go to the other side and do two turns there, then two more turns on the original, etc) and equally..Use a halyard on each side (main on one side and jib on the other) attached to the toe rail close to the existing shrouds(tension lightly) to stabilize the mast while the shrouds are off the chainplates. Pull the cotter pins and clevis pins once the shrouds are loose and remove the shrouds.. From the inside of the boat, you should be able to unbolt the chainplates and take them out for inspection.. When you go back up, be liberal with the sealant! .. Good Luck.

I would be sure to check the deck area around the chain plates. There is a good chance that their could be rot in that area.

I would think that some of the butyl would be the perfect product for these areas. It will stay pliable for "ever".

What era is your H'30?
