Hi Paddy-take a look at Mcgregor 26x 1995+ that boat has a nice locker build in. I have such boat right now--all boats should have same--works well all the time and is very convenient. jorgen

Has anyone any suggestions for fitting a chain locker in a Vega? My
first thoughts were to make a fibreglass box to sit in the very
front of the forepeak. Not sure wether to cut a lid in the deck or
to go with a hawsepipe. If raising the anchor by hand it might be
difficult to feed the chain in the hole. A lid would mean more work
but might make life easier when raising the anchor and would also
mean you could store the anchor in the loacker rather than on the
bow roller. Any suggestions??
Also, any suggestions on control while reversing? When I reverse it
seems a bit of a lottery which way the stern is going to go. Best
I've come up with so far is act like i meant it!

TIA

I used a hawsepipe, and it fit very nicely. But I put it centerline,
which weakens the forepeak, which could be a mistake. You might consider
putting it off center. I also put a hinged door onto the forepeak locker
(I think it was originally suppose to be a small sail locker). This
converts into a very nice chain locker, as it drains directly into the
bilge. I store the "normal" anchor hanging off the pullpit, as its a
danforth, and you can get the stainless steel holders and put them on
easily. I have wrapped the pullpit with 1 inch thick clear water piping
to act as chaffing gear...... it works well. But I would take the CQR
out of the stern locker if real holding power is needed. As to
reversing, until you get way on, its usually the wind that determines
which way you will go, my Vega has a tendency to put her stern into the
wind, as more sail area is forward of the pivot point........ Hope this
helps.....

Hi Paddy,

Vista already had a chain locker fitted when I bought her - it was so
well done that I'd assumed it was standard fit. I can get pictures if
that would be helpful.

On the subject of going backwards - your plan sound pretty effective
although I find the watchers start to look confused when you leave
half your gelcoat attached to the dockside. Don't you love those
watchers!

Has anybody noticed that in strong winds going backwards is easy as
long as you start off dead downwind. Is that cause the prop is so far
aft? or do all boats do that - I wouldn't know never having tried it
in anything other than a Vega.

I'll be spring soon.

Hi George

Hope all is going well. Going backwards into the wind is easy with the Vega as
she will always weathercock into the wind. Only problem is I always seem to
want to go backwards away from the wind!! Other way is to change to a Beta
with proper gearbox, helps enourmously.

Happy new Year

Hi George,

I believe that several of us are interested in the chain locker
possibility - count me in. So if you could post pictures of what yours
looks like, it would be highly appreciated (both inside and topsides).
Where does the rode ultimately attach to? I'm worried about using too
weak a point as attachment that could tear out.

Next time I go to see that she's OK, I'll take some pics. The rode
(all chain in my case) is only lightly attached as the most load that
should ever be on it is the weight of chain if you accidentaly let
everything go. The last two feet should be rope that it can be cut if
in extremis you need to abandon your anchor (tie a fender on first).

Still can't believe that the chain locker is not original equipment.

Sebastion, Use a chainhook and a snubber if you use an all chain rode.
Snubber should be cleated to the fore deck and a loop of chain should hang
between the bow and the chain hook. As previously suggested, always attach
the chain to the boat with a piece of light line and keep a knife handy.
