Having bought a boat with Cetol treated exterior wood, what do I need to do to take care of this now cracking and darkening wood. I tried just sanding a bit and the outcome was poor.

Maintenance of Cetol Teak Finish

Cetol is an awesome product but does require some maintenance. On a yearly basis, a light sanding is necessary with the application of a coat or two to keep up the film. It sounds like there has been no maintenance done for years. You'll have to take the darkened wood down to bare wood, clen it with something like Nu-Teak if you don't like the color after sanding and then build up three coats of the product. After this, annual maintenance is all that should be required. If the surface is gouged, you should apply a coat or two to seal the gouge so the wood doesn't darken.

This is the stuff to use, why don't more boaters know about it. Good luck Dan

My mistake

I just redid my exterior teak by stripping it, washing it, then sanding and three new coats. I made a mistake by not using a marine approved stripper, and it messed up my gelcoat in a couple of spots where I dripped. But the teak looks great. Follow the directions on the back of the Cetol can, and use a marine stripper.

Cetol again?

Thbe reason not all boaters use Cetol is that not all of us can stand the orange color. For us there is Armada, which is a similar product minus the awful orange.
