I recently bought some Cetol Gloss for my stern rail seats. Found out after I got it home that it requires a finish underneath. Any suggestions? Paul H S/V Linda Belle H26 95

Regular Cetol

I did a helmsman seat several years ago. Cleaned up the seat to bare wood, then coated with 3 coats of regular Cetol with very light sanding in between coats. Then used 2 coats of Cetol Gloss, again with very light sanding. Result was perfect, and after 2 years up North and 2 years in the Gulf of Mexico, the seat still looked like it was freshly done.

I used...

...Interlux Interstain as a tint and filler followed by 6 coats of Interlux Goldspar 95 varnish on the motor mount last year. It looks great after 12 months in the sun, rain, and snow (not much of that this year). Right now, the stern rail seat teak (removed them from the base) slats are sitting stained in my garage awaiting the next 50 degree plus day for varnish. One thing about the Interstain base coat is that you can vary the amount of stain by your technique of rubbing and drying time. Gives a beautiful finish for not too much additional work. alan
