I am refinishing all the exterior woodwork on my Catalina 22. I removed all the woodwork cleaned and sanded the teak. I am going to apply 2 to 3 coats of natural teak depending on the color. My question is when I apply the cetol high gloss will I get a deeper gloss the more coats I put on or am I wasting my time putting on more coats than reccomended.

What I did...

... on my cap-rail was to put three coats of Natural Teak and then two coats of gloss. Unfortunately the breeze picked up that night and dumped pollen all over the wet gloss. It was like sandpaper the next day! *cry So I let it dry out for a couple of weeks, sanded it down lightly and gave it another coat of gloss. Looks great. I don't think you need more than two coats of gloss however.

What I was told

When I refinished my rails, I was told by those more experienced than me to do the following: After stripping it, cut the first coat 50-50 with thinner. Cut the next coat 25-75 and then the third coat apply without cutting it. They said that this allows the finish to better penetrate the wood. Also, I was told a minimum of five coats and the more coats the better - it will allow the finish to last longer. And if you have the wood removed from the boat, why not take a little extra time? Finally, I was told not to apply just before evening (dew) nor in full sunlight nor in wind.

I like following the directions

on the can. I've been using various Cetol products for many years and with great results. I do not believe the Cetol instructions recommend thinning this product and I never have done so. One of the reasons to use Cetol is that is easy to use, relatively long lasting, and easy to maintain. Having said that, I also think "properly" applied varnish (i.e, lots of sanding, wood prep, more sanding between the 7+coats needed, expensive brushes, and tricky weather conditions in which to work) looks a lot better than Cetol. But I use Cetol because it "looks pretty good" and lasts. You really don't even have to sand to apply a maintenance coat as the new coat enlivens the old coat.

What Warren said...and if you put three or four coats on, it will last that many years, even while sitting in the OK sun all year.
