ok, i've cast my lot with the cetol side....(and the devil according to some it sounds like! :)) question is: which one? looks like cetol says put down some color with cetol 1 and then "seal" it with cetol 2,3. but, looking back in the archives it pretty much sounds like what everyone is using is a single stage. i'll just sit here and keep sanding till someone enlightens me.....

But on mine I put down three coats of Cetol Light and three coats of the clear with some sanding in between. Came out looking real nice. I never liked the look of Cetol but found the "Light" version acceptable. I was told that using the clear makes it easier to keep it looking good for a longer period of time.

what is cetol light?

all i saw was cetol 1 and cetol 2,3. also there are some clears/translucents called SRD and TGL. The first coat of cetol 1 on my wood was pretty dark. I'm letting it dry till tomorrow and then will sand with some 220 and then make-up my mind. i am almost afraid the next 2-3 coats will make things darker than i want. i'm no "new guy" to refinishing but this sure is funny stuff to work with....reminds me of thin molasses.

What is 1, 2, and 3?

Wonder if the stuff is different out there? Looking at my cans one say Cetol Marine Light the other Cetol Marine Gloss. The Cetol finish most folks are familiar with looks like mud brushed onto the wood. The "light" is no where near as dark but has a decidedly orange hue. The gloss tempers the color a bit and extends the life of the finish, I,m told. I was set on just using varnish but was persuaded by a guy I've known for a long time and most always knows what he is talking about. Not real excited about the color but if I do not have to do it often I'll accept the trade off. I did mine last winter and it has held up so far. I even have adjusted to the color so I guess I'll keep using it.

what i've got is sikkens 1

i've got the sikkens cetol brochure here. guess i could scan it if you wanted all the info. cetol 1 sounds like what you're talking about "mud brushed into the wood". sikkens recommends following that with cetol 23. i sorta gather the 1 is for coat one, and 2,3 are for coats 2,3....etc. the brochure shows nothing called "light". there is also a cetol SRD exterior stain and a cetol TGL gloss/satin. looks like that might be a good topcoat. geeezzzzz, with varnish i would have only have had to have one can! *O

I looked for the stuff you mentioned in the online stores but can't find it. Maybe somone else could shed some light here.

Cetol 1 & 23 were designed for houses

Maybe it won't matter, but the Sikkens Cetol 1 and the 23 applications is for exterior house applications (log homes and such.) The Sikkens Cetol Gloss, Light, Satin are intended more for marine applications since they are more translucent and 'lighter' in color. You may want to call Sikkens at 866-SIKKENS and see if they can provide input. On the bright side, they do say that Cetol 1 is okay for outdoor teak furniture. Dave Crowley s/v Wind Dreamer

that makes sense

marine applications is not the first thing that comes to mind here in the desert southwest. (sometimes even after you tell the person at the paintstore). i'll talk to sikkens.

thanks everyone, and the verdict is...

looks like i am putting about 3 coats of the cetol tgl gloss over the cetol 1. a bit of a bothersome way to go but first coats look quite promising. thanks everybody for the help.
