What is it? I have a 2GM20F and have read about cetane rating requirements. Are these similar to octane rating, the higher the number for higher compression engines? My local refinery says their rating is 43, so. Thanks
Where high octane spells better anti-knock in gasoline, high cetane rating means high anti-knock in diesel fuel. While this sounds about the same, they are totally different. Octane improvement slows the burn-rate of gasoline, while high cetane means quicker ignition capability of diesel fuel. There you go! S/V Iowa
I have asked many fuel stations what the cetane rating of their fuel was. It is not posted like on gasoline pumps. They look at me dumb-like as though I was from Mars. My engine wants 45 or better. My genset wants 40 minimum. I have no clue whether or not they are getting those ratings. I sense that 40-45 is the "typical" fuel available.
I was told that in our area most marine fill stations use (essentially) home heating fuel with a low cetane rating. OK for power boats that use a lot of fuel but not very good for sailboats. I have been filling up at local truck stop with a 2 gal. container. Higher cetane rating and less chance of contamination because they sell so much fuel their tanks are usually full.
US diesel fuel has a lower cetane rating then foreign fuels (especially the home heating oil sold at marinas) Since I have been adding PS (Power Service-available at Wal Mart) diesel additive my Yani 3GM30F is starting MUCH better.
