I am working on a 2006 centerboard Catalina 22 which just encountered a "near catastrophic" failure. Where the centerboard cable runs through the trunk is a bronze tube that attaches to the trunk which is what the hose attaches to effectively housing the cable and spanning the distance between the trunk and the waterline. This fitting inside the hose has broken completely off essentially flooding the boat. The owner was sailing Sunday and noticed that she was getting a little sluggish, checked below decks, and saw a foot of water in his cabin and this 1 1/2" geyser flooding his boat. He was able to stem the flow by stuffing rags into it but it naturally freaked him out. It is now on his lift and I'm in the process of repairing. My question and comment is: there was no glass around this bronze stem which has threads on it, just some factory putty gobbed it in place and no female fitting bonded into the trunk allowing this threaded nipple to be secured. Has anyone encountered this problem in this vintage boat? My comment is; if this is the norm, and as this starts to happen, there may be more of you that may find yourselves "in the same boat". If you do, be sure to have a screwdriver and lots of rags ready to staunch the intrusion of water. As we say in this business, "All boats are sinking, it's just a matter of how fast".....
