Centerboard Pendant Attachment

After trailering my O’day 23 a couple hundred miles, we launched in a lake only to have the centerboard free fall and hang up on the bottom. As I pulled up the pendent to raise the board the entire pendant came out only to reveal a kinked and broken cable. I dove under expecting to find that the attaching hardware would still be connected to the centerboard. Au contraire. I found the hardware gone, probably jostled loose along the way. I swaged a new eye and thimble into the remaining cable and jury rigged a new cable to centerboard connection. (I won’t tell you how. Let’s just say it involved a heavy duty zip tie.) After searching the forum archives I could not find the information I needed. So, the question is what size is the shackle that connects the pendant to the center board? It appears that the approximately dollar sized (we all remember what that was) hole is 3 or more inched from the trailing edge of the board with a slight notch on the trailing edge to accommodate the shackle. I don’t want to get too big of shackle for fear of causing the center board to bind in the up position. Or, is there an alternative method to attach the pendant to the center board. Thanks for the picture! It's worth a thousand words. A quick question though. Does the cable connect to the crotch of the clevis by simply running the cable through the clevis, secured by a ferrule on the inside? I think I need to re-think the eye in the cable scenario. Or maybe purchase a complete assembly from Rudy. $29.00 + s&h.Thanks,Shine OnDon

I'm looking at your pix of the 23 OD with the centerboard dropped down. I have the OD 222 1986 and plan to remove the centerboard this fall at haul out. Mine has a chunk like a bite on the back edge about three inches missing. Have you removed your centerboard? Is it an easy job? Straight forward operation? I under stand there are shims that are caulked in place somehow.

A little more detail on the connection. The rope portion is braided. The cable has an eye and as I recall, the cable is around the eye and is then swedged. the rope has an eye splice through the eye of the cable. Hope this makes sense.Second note - to address the question of removing the CD. No I have not taken mine out. Just lowered it while in the lift so we could wash and paint it.Regards, Dave

CB Pendant

Just had the yard replace the orginal rope/wire pendant. My '79 also had the large hole and the small notch on the trailing edge of the cb. The yard was a little confused until we found a 1/4 hold from the notch to the large hole. Guess where the cable goes. Right through the hole into the larger hole,backed with a stainless washer (bent slightly to match the diameter) then the cable is double backed and clamped. No worried about getting hung up with an oversized shackle. I was afraid that too large of a shackle might damage the cb trunk if I ever put the boat back on it's trailer. This is the way O'day seemed to orginally designed the connection.

no more cable

I just ordered a new pendant for my 1979 Oday 23 from Rudy. He said he no longer uses wire, just rope. I didn't ask why. Mine is in the mail.

Rope only?

Yea, I ordered one of those rope onlys too. When I received it and sent a diver down to attach it to the centerboard. Big Surprise! The shackle wasn't long enough to reach the orginal opening. I called Rudy. Was told drill another hole in the cb. Don't get me wrong, I have ordered lots of items from Rudy. That was the only item that is still in the box. ($29 bucks, S & H and cost of the diver, gone) , I figured O'day already put one hole in the cb and I wasn't about to drill another one. Anyway, I was just answering an inquirey. Like I said in my orginal post. If the shackle is too big and jams, or worse, cracks the cb trunk. Opps!

CenterBoard Parts Photo

I removed the CB on our 1984 Oday 222 and it wasn't a tough job. The 6 philip head screws that hold the stainless plates can be a hard to remove...

Thanks for taking the time to produce the pix's.You removed your 222 centerboard while suspended in a travel lift? Mine has a chunk missing on the back upper 25% edge 3"X 3". I can understand the screws, the two smaller ones look like wood screws and the outside longer one look to me like a threaded machine screw,, Correct? Were the two spacer blocks held in with caulking? Or did everything jus fall out when you removed the six screws... Rope/Shackle Only?

I received my rope pendant from Rudy. After reading the previous posts (Jack Spencer) I was wondering if anyone else has used the “new and improved” rope/shackle pendant. It would seem that there may be issues with this setup. I also thought that the shackle was a little short. Does anyone have an alternative?Thanks,Shine OnDon

Larry ,I've printed your pixs for future reference.. Since I plan to do this at haul-out this winter I just may call you If I need to pick your brain. Thanks for the help.. Looks like your centerboard had some water intrusion. And it does look like just plywood glassed over.. $400.00 Bucks I think I saw for a new one. That's kinda pricey out here in Ohio, buys a lot of west marine epoxy.Chuck R
