I need to replace the lines that retract and drop the center board. The only access I see are the plates that secure the center board on the bottom of the hull. My plan is to drop the center board out of its' housing and go from there. There is some play side to side, so I imagine I will also have to replace a bushing on the pivot. I was going to replace the line with a braided line. There seems to be a hardened putty around the housing and screws to make a water tight fitting. Any experience with this repair?? What is the putty that is used around the fitting? thanks, nate

A few of the articles on the link below refer to problems with the centreboard and provide diagrams and descriptions of changing the lines. You are correct in your planned operation to replace the lines. The board must be dropped about a foot from the bottom of the boat. Depending on how it is held in place, pivot bolt on wedges accessible from underneath, or pivot bolt accessible through inspection ports in cockpit, remove the apparatus that holds the cb. With the board in a horisontal position, the upper forward metal tang is the uphaul. Remove the screws, that hold the wire in place, and replace with your new wire. If you can tape the new line to the old and thread through the uphaul hole. Reinsert the cb. Now do the same with the downhaul. It is an all nylon line, so with a small screwdriver, dig out the putty, and knot of the old line, replace and repoxy a new line then thread through the downhaul hole, the series of blocks, cleat and eventually to the uphaul rigging. This site has a picture of how the lines run. See the 4 picture in, cb rigging scheme http://groups.msn.com/RogerConrad/shoebox.msnw If you old line long gone, then make a threading wire from a coat hanger about 20 inches long with a small tight hook at one end that will embed into the line or hold the new line with duct tape while you thread it through. A flashlight and a buddy at the other end of the hole is a huge asset. I did mine last spring, but the uphaul wire was in good condition, so I did not have to drop the cb to get at the downhaul line. It can be reached when the board is in the full up positon, from underneath, and there is enough room to fish the coathanger in front of the raised cb, although it works better if you fish from the hole down in the cb trunk, tape the line and haul it back up.
