I am considering buying a 70's Hunter 30. The centerboard is frozen in the up position. Is it possible to free it without a haulout? How big a job is this? The owner says it is barnacles keeping it there, and it hasn't been lowered in many years. Thanks

Survey

Don't buy the boat without a survey and the centerboard fixed. How does this guy know it is barnacles since the board hasn't been lowered in years or out of the water? Who knows, the boat may have such large blisters they are holding the board up :).

bad idea

Don't even think about buying that boat without having it hauled for survey. You already know it's been neglected, what you don't know is whether it's fixable without spending more money on the repair than the boat's worth in the first place.

barnacles used to keep the centerboard on my

Precision 21 from dropping. Those buggers just loved the centerboard well, despite the bottom paint. Solution was to make sure the board was locked, dive and use a putty knife to clean out the slots between the centerboard and the keel. As long as I lowered the board every two weeks, it would not stick. Buying a bigger boat with a fixed keel ultimately solved the problem. Getting a survey is the best $$$ you may ever spend on a boat. Good Luck
