centerboard/access ports

This past weekend the centerboard cable on my Mac 19 detached from the board. I had to leave the boat before I could inspect the fix. Are the clear access ports screw-in, or do I have to unscrew the entire unit to get in there? Anyone had this problem? Thanks.
