Proper tongue weight
David, You're probably going to have to go by a trial by error procedure to find the proper tongue weight for your trailer. In other words; you're going to have to get the center of the keel directly over the tandem axles and use a scale to get the 10% of the boat's total weight on your trailer's draw bar. I don't know how you are planning on doing it. For instance, whether you plan on having it set on the trailer with a lift, or putting it on from the water, but we're only talking a matter of a few inches forward or backward on the trailer to get the proper tongue weight for the ball of the towing vehicle. You don't want too much weight in the back of the trailer, or it will fish tail while being towed. So, it's really a matter of getting the boat on over the axles, checking the weight with a scale while the tongue is in a horizontal position and not connected to the towing vehicle. Once you get the proper tongue weight, you can move your winch stanchion right up the bow and tighten down the bolts. Then you can get the proper adjustment on your bunks with two Hydraulic jacks and a little measuring to get both sides equal. When I set up my new Long Mfg. trailer for my boat, I used four of my sailboat stands in the stern of my boat, two on each side, to do it safely on land. Good luck. Joe

Tongue Weight Guidelines
As a general rule of thumb, the tongue weight should be 5-10% of the weight of the boat (as transported) and trailer. Check your tow unit’s operating manual for rated tongue weights. I prefer to have closer to 10% of the weight carried on the tow unit. Shine On! Don

I like the great ideas that Triad has in these trailers. The adjustable pads and the ladder on the winch stanchion are just two features that every trailer should have. I can tell by looking at this set-up that it would be a snap to do bottom painting while the boat is sitting on the trailer. I'm curious about whether it would be possible to raise the hull enough so that the keel is off the keel board of the trailer, enough to remove the board, and let the centerboard down to get at it? A friend of mine is able to do this on his trailer, which is not a triad, but something similar to what the MacGregors have under their boats. He has a Seaward 22. Joe

What is the keel type on trailer in the picture? I thought the keel was deeper on the 272? Ed K

272 has Wing Keel
As far as I know, all 272s, and the Pearson-built 280s that followed, have a lead wing keel that draws 2'11". Oddly enough, that is an inch LESS than my little Potter 15 with it's centerboard down! If you go to this link, http://members.aol.com/oday272j/index.htm and scroll down a little ways you can see a picture of the keel, including the seam where the boat changes from fiberglass to lead. It is a bolt-on keel, not internal ballast like the shoal keel/centerboard boats.
