I have a 1986 ODay 26 ft that is moored on Fire Island inlet area and is sitting in about 3 to 4 feet of water. My rope for the center board snapped and as the tide changes the center board was stuck in the sand and the chain for the mooring was getting caught on the CB. Well I fixed that problem by putting a line on one side of the grab rail and going under the boat and lifting the CB and tying off the line to the other grab rail. Now here comes my question Can I use a piece of romex electricial cable and tape a new line on the end of the cable and snake it through the tubing and then attach to CB?

Your centerboard keel slot has a small recess up inside where a single sheave is located. The pendant line rides over this sheave pulley. The romex may go through the sheave but then on the other hand, it may not. I really think that you would be better off doing this on the hard where you can look up into the keel slot with a flashlight and make sure that the line is through the sheave. My friend a fellow YC member Ray has an 86 O'Day 26 on a trailer that he set up himself. He was able to take his boat off the trailer a couple of years ago and remove his centerboard at his house. If you're not up to this kind of task, perhaps you could have the boatyard raise it up high enough for you to snake a tag line down through the pipe from the cockpit.
Years ago, I was able to raise his 26 at the club with four of my Brownell's Boatyard SB-3 sailboat stands under the stern and a hydraulic jack under the bow close to the front of the keel. His boat was on the trailer crooked and the tide had gone down too far to back down and straighten it out. I think that this was how Ray built up his confidence and courage to do this to his boat at home. Of course sailboat stands aren't meant to be used in this fashion. They are only supposed to keep the boat from tipping over. Four of my sailboat stands can raise my O'Day 222 into the air with no problem. It goes without saying that dealing with this kind of weight is very dangerous. So if you're a DIY guy, I'll let you make the call. Good luck!

Hi, T Canning,
I have successfully snaked a wire down through the pipe that leads down thru bottom of boat, to replace the CB pendant (hmmm...three times now). There is, at least on O'Day 222's, a 90 degree turn that the wire has to negotiate to make it down there. Takes me about 20 minutes to convince it to get through that turn. After that, I attach wire to the CB pendant, and pull it back thru to cleat off at companionway step in cockpit.

Now I just have this problem:
It looks like this was a long time coming; the CB was delaminated and even though I always store it upright when on the mooring, the heavy use when sailing, rocking side to side on the pin, finally weakened it enough to finally snap it off. We dragged it to the dock; a sad sight...

Hopefully you won't have this problem!

Hi Joe,
Have you ever had your CB snap off? See above post. If you have any advice for that, for example, I see on DR site that there are a number of plates, wedges, etc, that I may or may not need (if I cannot re-use these things off old CB pieces). Going to haul out Oct 12ish...boat will be on trailer, so not sure what I will see down there. Probably nothing...haha.
Looks like a $1K fix...ugh.

Talk to you soon!!

Hi Michelle,
No. I've never had a problem with my centerboard. The fiber pivot pin was still in good condition when I removed my centerboard. I'm pretty sure that Rudy has these pins in stock. He no longer has the fiberglass wedges or the molds to make them, the last I talked to him.
You should be able to use the stainless steel plates, wedges, and bolts over again. If the pin is still good, you may be able to use that too. I did. I think probably the hardest task is going to be getting the boat in a position where you can work under the keel. I had the bottom of my keel 18" off the ground this past spring. Let me know how you make out.
Joe
