Im trying to find some info on the rating in the 1985 Hunter 31. From what I've read there is an 'A' rating for long passage making boats (blue water) then 'B' for ocean (coastal cruising?), then 'C' for lakes and such. Etc....

Thanks!

Not rated! So I would select one that you think will fit your ability. Maybe a "B" for a H'31.

My pie in the sky is to sail from Seattle to Mexico for the baja haha in 2014. I fully understand my boat is not ment to sail long voyages for a variety of reasons but I'm hopefull it can make the trip down (id put the boat on a truck for the return trip) the coast. The most concerning part being the washington and oregon coastlines aka the pacific graveyard. I hear of things like flimsy rigging, small tanks, thin hull, big ports, etc. While true the engineer in me says there precautions I can take to make it and not have to scrap the boat and start all over on a "stronger" boat.

I would most likely sail down with some experienced charter captain and hopefully learn some stuff down to the friendlier waters of california. By friendlier I mean more spots to duck out from bad weather. If the weather is peachy I dont think you need the baba, valiant or pacific seacraft. But then again I have never been that far out but have been in some huge swells deep sea fishing 5 miles out from ocean shores.

Hitting something while at night does scare the bejesus out of me though. I think this too can be mitigated by sailing slooooow. piece of jib and fully reefed main to maintain only a couple knotts maybe? or just screw it and heave-to for a nights sleep? Just some thoughts. There has got to be a way!

Jared:

I think the H31 is very capable of making it's way down the coast. There have been boats that are not as capable making much more difficult passages.

I don't think that the rigging is that light but your tankage is an issue. Your biggest challenge is coming home. That is the bash part of the baha!

Well thanks for the vote of confidence! I have been thinking the same thing reading old sailing stories.

I would most likely truck the boat back. From where depends upon how much we can take. I'm sure we would figure out if we are up for it before the final leg from Oregon to Seattle.

What kind of tankage would you have? 500 mile range in fuel sound ok? 60 gallons of water for 2 people ok?

I have the same boat (85 H31) and have made the trip from SF to San Diego and Mexico several times. The boat is certainly capable, and as you have already recognized, the trip back is much harder.

I added a flexible water tank on the starboard side to give me an extra 25 gallons, and I carry an extra 12 gals of diesel in jerry cans. I also load on about 15 gallons of bottled water in various cubby holes under the seats. Have not had a problem with either fuel or water (although I generally single hand).

For planning purposes, I figure on 125 miles in a 24 hour period. Depending on your personal choice, from Seattle it can be a very manageable trip. There are good harbors about every 200 miles along the whole route, so you really don't need to sail more than 48 hours at a time.

I usually head 15-20 miles offshore for better wind, and to be outside the crab pots and inside the shipping lanes. It's probably 7-10 days to SF (depending on how much you stop). SF is a good place to linger and re-stock. Then it's 4-5 days to LA. The Ha-Ha rendezvouz is San Diego, but once you turn the corner at Pt Conception, you're into So Cal sailing (light air, warm weather) so you may as well enjoy it.

I think the longest sail for the Ha-Ha fleet is less than 48 hours, but you'll be sailing veterens by then.

Fair winds and following seas...
