CDI roller furling system

I'm considering replacing my presant head sail furling system (the original Hood Sea Furl system). My last boat was a H23 and I had the CDI system on it, I had no problems and loved the system. I now have an 91 H33 with a fussy furling system. I'm just wondering if any other boat owners in the 30'-35' range use the CDI roller furling system and if so do you like it? The Hood Sea Furl system I'm using right now has a head bearing that sometimes acts up, not allowing the sail to furl in. When I'm furling in the sail the halyard (what little there is of it up there) also turns. Has anybody replaced the head bearing on one of these or can it be serviced?

hood furler

The Hood furler can be rebuilt and/or retrofitted with a single-line system. If the bearings are original they probably are worn or dirty and that's why it is malfunctioning. Go to www.pompanette.com and click on the Hood page for tech info. Personally I would stick with the Hood before changing to CDI, but that's just my opinion and if you had the CDI system before and liked it you may want to change.

Halyard tension

I have a Hood furler it requires that the tension on the jib halyard remain firm, any slack allows the halyard to wrap causing the head bearing to foul. We have a "do not disturb" tag on that clutch. I also sailed a Hunter 23.5 and the lighter loads made it easier to handle.

Halyard tension

You are right, it turned out to be the halyard tension. I recently replaced the halyards and had some chafe on the new line. I than put some chafing tape on the halyard and that made it just slightly too large to make it all the way up into the shive. The result was the halyard was not ALL the way up and the line was fouling at the top. I haven't sailed with it yet but all seems to be working at the dock (doesn't it always?)

CDI on a 28.5

I have used this on my '87 28.5 for two years and am very pleased. it is by far the least expensive furler on the market and has worked find for me in Chesapeake Bay weather to 25 knots. I like the built in halyard which avoids halyard wrap problems.

Hey RAY? size of sail

I too have 28.5 and hope to go furling sometime soon. Q? What size sail are you running on it 125? 135? Jim McCue

135, I think

I am not absolutely sure about this, but I think my genoa is a 135...it was not original equipment, but was given to me by the dealer (Hunter dealer) when I bought the boat two years ago. Be sure to get the foam luff attached so that it furls with better shape. But the CDI works great. No complaints. Ray

Thanks, Ray!

A fellow across the dock from me in a Catalina 27 has a CDI with 125 and was happy with it. Jim McCue
