I am thinking of adding a roller furling to my H34. I am leaning towards CDI because of cost. I sail inland in GA usually single-handed any suggestion would be appreciated.

check 'um out before you buy.

Look at the archives before you decide. They are a lot of good units on the market (not that they don't all have their own problems). Price should be your last consideration. If you pay for something that does not work and need to replace it what have you saved?

Check the "Bearing" Status

We have CDI furling on our 34 and it works great. We also had it on our 26 ft. Our 26 had the old style bearing and the 34 has and new different style bearing the seller had replaced before we bought it. It cost around one hundred dollars. It does make a big difference on the muscle power needed to pull in the sail. You should ask what the status of the bearing in new units is because if the company has not made this upgrade, you will. Otherwise we like it and serves ours needs very well. Craig

CDI is a decent product

The CDI products generally get good comments from owners and I believe Practical Sailor gave them a decent review. My H26 has the standard bearing, which is just a nylon bushing (disk) in the roller drum. It works well but requires more muscle than if I upgraded (about $100) to the ball bearing model.

CDI Reefer Model

I have the Reefer model CDI, have had little problem with the unit, I did have to replace the bearings a few years ago because the folks who installed the unit did not follow the instructions. Since then, It is flawless! This after 11 years too. CDI customer service is great too. John K s/v 50/50 H34 on Barnegat Bay

Got one, 19 yrs old and works perfectly.

I can't say if the new CDI's are up to the old standard but mine has been controlling a 150 on a 30ft S2 for a very long time. One thing I've noticed is the CDI appears more robust than the current crop of value engineered units. Maybe that's why it's still plugging away after 19 years. Haven't seen any old Harkens or Schiefers(sp) around to compare it to :)? None of this will help you in your decision. Best advice is to ID hollow brand hipe and discount it. H34 Furling

I've got an old CDI furler on my '83 h34. Can't say I'd recommend this to anyone although it has lasted a long time. I've considered upgrading. Literature suggests Furlex is the best but I was unable to find anyone willing to discount the price. Second choise is Profurl. I installed one on a friends boat and was very impressed. Price was right through JSI. If I was buying one today I'd go with Profurl. Barry

CDI on H34

I have a CDI unit on my 1984 H34 and couldn't be happier. Furls/unfurls on any point of sail. Works flawlessly.
