CDI roller furling difficulty

We finally got out on the bay for a sail this week! Without any manuals, instructions, etc. We raised the jib onto the roller furler but could not get the sail tight and the "back side" of the internal halyard seemed to short. Kinda hard to explain what i did. I'm not sure it is right, but the sail IS up, just not how i like it. Could someone "walk" me thru the raising of the jib in the CDI roller furler. Also, what have others with the CDI furler done with the jib halyard (used for mast stepping) after mast is up. I just shackled it to the base of the mast.Thanks,Jay

Instruction Manual??

You should have an instruction manual from CDI which explains how to rig. I have a booklet which I'm sure you can get from CDI if you don't have it. Their phone # is 508-922-2322. Also, can your Hunter dealer help you?Jib slides up one side, internal halyard goes up and over the other side and ties to top of sail. Bottom of jib gets tied off with small line to spool assembly and internal halyard gets tied off to cleat on the upper part of spool assembly. With furling jib, boat's jib halyard is not used except for mast raising and lowering or for use with crusing spinnaker. Good luck!

Jay, I have found it is a good idea to have....

6 wraps of line on the furler before pulling the sail out and winding more line on the spool. The reason for this is that depending on how your line wraps (all around the small protion of the spindle vs. over its self and therefore requiring more rope)you could end up with a condition where you don't have enough rope to fully pull out the jib. This might not occure until the 2d or 10th time you use it, but it will leave you wondering what happened. Ray

I was considering removing my jib halyard

But someone pointed out that, in a pinch, you could use it to raise the main, part way, if needed.

Jib Halyard as safety

We find comfort in using the jib halyard as a safety during forestay coupling/uncoupling should the purchase slip, also, like you say, if the main broke or ... well.. you can think of a much of stuff that out weight removing.
