Hey all, Thanks for the trailer answers. Here's another one which i'm seriously contemplating. My 1972 oday 23 does not have roller furling . I'm seriously looking at the CDI 2 roller furler. Now, I'm presented with a unique situation. Oday 23 with full pop-tops have keel stepped masts. My mast is stepped. Now, if I get the CDI, I need to take my mast down to install the CDI, or can I somehow get hoisted or whatever up the mast for install? ie - I really don't want to take the mast down. But have a feeling I might. Need some quick tips..suggestions. Mark 1972 oday 23

Are you absolutely sure your mast is keel stepped?Our 25 Oday is deck stepped.We bought a CDI FF2 for our Catalina 22 last year and the foil could be installed without bringing the mast down.We are able to raise and lower our mast in 10 minutes or so.It was a lot easier to do it with the mast lowered.CDI makes a great product.

I installed a CDI furling on a 22' without stepping the mast. I supported the mast with a tie-down to the main halyard. Used the jib halyard to haul up the pvc extrusion & shook it to allow the forestay to come down the tube.

Another idea
You may want to consider the Schaefer SnapFurl CF500 system which is designed for boats up to 24' and that may be trailered. This unit may be easier to install.

I just installed a hood system with the flex foil and there is an easy way to do it. Just insert from the bottom of the foil a electrical wire snake and tie the end to the stay and all you have to do is pull on the snake and push on the foil an it will go up easily. Good luck this will be you best investment on the boat I know that’s the way I feel after using if for a wile.

Charly's approach also works with the CDI. I installed one (FF6 BB) on my O28 with the mast in place. I don't know about using the jib halyard to raise the foil-we just threaded the fish line through the foil, attached the line to the bottom of the stay and up she went. I recently installed a CDI system on my '25 Oday with the mast up. Other than the size of the CDI system, I suspect the procedure would be the same for your '23. I bought a video showing the step by step procedure for installing the CDI system from SailRite, 1-800-348-2769. Once you see it done, and if you follow the instructions on the video, you'll find the installation to be straight forward. It's a two person job and I think I installed mine in about two or three hours.

Timm Yes, I'm absolutely sure. It is a keel stepped mast. The Oday 23 which have full pop-tops (ie-the entire cabin top raises), are keel stepped. My mast has been up and in place since 2004 sailing season. I'd love to get the FF2 CDI. Mark

CDI on an Oday28
We love ours. I installed it by myself with the mast up in about 1 1/2 hours. With the exception of sliding it up the forestay, it was pretty easy. Just make sure you have a halyard to support the mast while the forestay is unattached, and run a messenger line (which is attached to the forestay) through the luff. I would also suggest getting a good 1/4" line for the furling drum...Sta-set would be a good solution. Go to CDI's website and download the installation instructions to familiarize yourself with the procedure.

Yes it definitely is for sure a keel stepped mast. My model of 1972 oday 23 is pop-top model, where the entire cabin lifts up on four posts. The mast goes straight through the cabin top to the tabernacle mounted above the keel. Was not fun lowering in the first time, but manageable. I wish I did have a deck stepped mast, but will work with what I have. thanks for the advice everyone! Sounds like I can possibly install with the mast raised and in place. thanks!

Since I have keel stepped mast and it's been raised since spring of 2004, anyone know what the pin-to-pin length is on my type of boat. I've been researching it and coming up blank. Later models
On later models of the 23 (post '78, the Mk II version), the I dimension is listed as 28.0 ft. I don't know if this is correct for the older versions too. I doubt it is too much different, but even a couple of inches would be significant. Try Rudy at D&R Marine; he used to work for Oday and has tons of old info. When I replaced the standing rigging of my Oday 23 (1979), he had the factory measurements already down. Of course, the factory measurements were often wrong and I gave Rudy the actual measurements taken when my mast was down for the year. As I am sure you have deduced, this is SO much easier with the mast down. If you really don't want to take down the mast and need the measurement, one easy option comes to mind: use the jib halyard to hoist the end of a tape measure to the peak of the mast; hold the measure against the forestay and read off the measurement.
