Hi, I have a 74 hunter 25 which I am diligantly restoring, I got the boat with a cdi #2 roller furling. I am trying to replace the internal halyard, as the previous owner had simply jammed a big line in there making nearly impossible to removed the sail. (took 2 hrs. to get the jib down). When I try to run the new line to the top, it keeps getting stuck (I used the sew and tape method of connect halyards). Has anyone done this procedure before, any suggestions?

If memory serves, the CDI roller furling system mounts over the forestay and is supported aloft with the jib halyard. If I read your article corrrectly, the jib halyard you are talking about is the one within the CDI system. With this information down, I would recommend you dropping the roller furling system. This can be done quite easily when the boat is out of the water. If it is in the water, it can still be done, but you must be very careful. When you extract the roller furling from the forestay, attatch a line to the end of the forestay. This line will then travel inside of the CDI system and allow you to "pull" the forestay back through during instalation. Once you have access to the top of the system, it should be much easier to replace the halyard. Good luck!!

Replacing CDI Halyard

I beleive CDI is Crusing Direct Systems? Check their web-site and then call them to send you a replacement halyard. The normal haylard comes with a metal stopper and a de-cored section. Easier than making your own.

Here's What I would do

I have an old Cruising Design system similiar (but bigger) on my h34. The easiest way to replace it would be to have go up to the top of the mast using the main halyard and proper chair. Cut the old one off and pull a new wire through the pulley up top. Taking the system off is a pain. If I were keeping my boat long term I'd replace the CDI with a Profurl! Barry s/v "PER DIEM too"
